The Big Thank YouFirst I should like to thank Mr A Wherry Worcestershire's County Archivist for kindly giving me permission to reproduce certain information held by the Worcestershire Record Office (WRO), which I have included in the pages Delving into the Archives; Some Wills & Letters of Administration 1650 -1922 The Hartwrights of Worcestershire, UK Hartwright Reminiscences of life during World War II and Richard Hartwright and a brief history of gloving in Worcestershire. The City of Worcester Museum and Art Gallery through Angie Irvine kindly gave me access to the Fownes Collection of Gloves. My thanks also to Malvern Hills District Council for permission to use a copyrighted photograph of Air raid damage in Somers Road, Malvern during World War II, which will be found in John Austin Hartwright’s War-time Reminiscence Mr Wherry’s staff are friendly and helpful and have always made my visits to the Record Office at County Hall and The Family History Centre a pleasure. My special thanks go to Cynthia Yarrows née Hartwright in the USA who has generously made all her Hartwright researches available to me. My gratitude goes to all those who have given me permission to include extracts from their “Reminiscences” and who provided the accompanying photographs. Joyce Fowler née Hartwright and her cousin Margaret Hartwright were two of the first Hartwrights in the UK that I contacted and they did much to encourage and help me in the difficult early days. From further afield Mike Streeton and David Farmery – Hartwright descendants – gave much information about their branches. Pam Minshall let me have photographs of paintings of her 19th century Hartwright ancestors, whilst Betty Wells allowed me to photograph her Hartwright “heirlooms”. I have enjoyed the continued friendship of Edith Hartwright, whose husband John Edmund Hartwright provided the link to the Canadian Hartwrights. The late Eric Hartwright helped me understand something of the large branch of Hartwrights in the Nottingham and Derby area. Here are the names of just some of the other Hartwrights and Hartwright descendants whom I was fortunate enough to meet or correspond with. Many of them wrote their Reminiscences as a permanent record for future generations, and deserve particular mention. Marjorie, Vi, Ted and Connie, Kathleen, Nancy, Chris and Josie, Nigel and Jennie, Graham, Patrick, Colin, Harold, George (Cecil), Cynthia and her husband Lloyd Roberts, Ron, David, Jack and Doris, Joyce, Clive and Alison, Simon, Kate, Archie and Joyce, John Edmund and Edith, Paul, John Austin, Charles, George and Felicity, Violet Lockyer on behalf of her grandmother Ellen Pierce née Hartwright, Dorothy Robinson on behalf of her late uncle George Edward Hartwright, John Nolan in Australia on behalf of his grandfather Frederick William Hartwright. The final
thanks go to Colin and Jonathan who have put up with me.
