The Hartwright Family
Frequently Asked Questions

When and where are the earliest records of Hartwrights that you have found?
In Barbados in the West Indies. A Lieutenant Thomas Hartwright was living there in the 1640’s. When he died in 1651 he left muscovados sugar rather than money as bequests. See Some Wills and Letters of Administration from 1650 -1922. The first appearance of the name Hartwright is in 13th century York in the north of England.

Are the present day Hartwrights in Australia, Canada, Hong Kong, South Africa, the UK and the USA related?
Most are descended from Thomas Hartwright born in 1698, who lived in the parish of Claines near Worcester, England from 1731 until his death in 1771. Branches of the Hartwright Family

Have you made a connection yet with 19th/20th century Afro-Caribbean Hartwrights in Texas, Georgia, Oregon, Wisconsin and also the other ethnic groups in the US?
No not yet. Perhaps you can help me, if so please get in touch.

How many Hartwrights are there today and where do most of them live?
Probably about 300 using the name. Most of us live in the “Midlands” of England. (See The Hartwright Family page 1 for Worcestershire maps)

Have you compiled a Family Tree?
Yes I have made a basic online chart in order to avoid infringement of UK Data Protection legislation. I have given some details of the history of each branch of the family under The Hartwrights from Worcestershire and Other 17th century Hartwright Families from Shropshire and London

I’m stuck. Which branch do I belong to and how can I understand if the names you give such as John of Hanbury, and James of the Rhydd are anything to do with my branch?
Click here for an explanation of the Branches of the Hartwright Family

I’m looking for a connection between my family name and the Hartwrights. Why haven’t you included lists of the registration of Hartwright Births Marriages and Deaths in England and Wales since 1835?
I didn’t want to duplicate information currently being compiled by wonderful volunteers who are transcribing millions of names from the Registrar General’s Office Indices from 1835. Thanks to the trustees of the FreeBMD charity, Rootsweb.com and their partners these indices are freely available on freebmd.com. If you have a specific query contact me.

Do you have more information that is not on this website?
Yes, many Hartwrights already have the Hartwright Family “book” which I compiled with their help in the 1990’s. Most of the remaining information I hold is for Worcestershire and the US. Cynthia Hartwright Yarrows has kindly let me have details of all her researches in the US and like me she is happy to help with your enquiries. Please contact me and I will arrange for her to get in touch.
