Some of the earliest known Worcestershire records for Hartwright are found in the Parish Chest for St John’s Church Claines. These include rental and apprenticeship records. Most of the Hartwrights world-wide are descended from Thomas Hartwright born about 1698 – died 1771.

St John’s Church, Claines, near Worcester

An Edward Hartwright was baptised  in St Andrew’s church Ombersley, Worcs in 1700.  His son Edward went to live in Claines parish with his second wife Ursula Small and his family.  Thomas I of Claines born 1698 may have been Edward Snr.’s brother. (See also page 12)

Thomas was churchwarden at St John’s Claines in 1735. Here is a copy of his 1736 accounts.

Thomas I of Claines was buried with his first wife Mary.  Their gravestone is now attached to the outside wall of the church. His will can be found at the County Record Office, Worcester.
