Some of the
earliest known Worcestershire records for Hartwright are found in the
Parish Chest for St John’s Church Claines. These
include rental and apprenticeship records. Most of the Hartwrights world-wide
are descended from Thomas Hartwright born about 1698 – died 1771.

An Edward Hartwright
was baptised in St Andrew’s church Ombersley, Worcs in 1700. His
son Edward went to live in Claines parish with his second wife Ursula
Small and his family. Thomas I of Claines born 1698 may have been Edward
Snr.’s brother. (See also page 12)
Thomas was churchwarden at
St John’s Claines in 1735. Here is a copy of his 1736 accounts.

Thomas and his first wife Mary had three children. Details about his son
William and his descendants begin on the next page. Mary died in 1753
and two years later at the age of about fifty-seven he married Elizabeth
Jones who was thirty-two years his junior. He and Elizabeth had four
children and you can read about them and some of their descendants on
pages 9 to 12.
Thomas I of
Claines was buried with his first wife Mary. Their gravestone is now
attached to the outside wall of the church. His will can be found at the
County Record Office, Worcester.
