This is my husband’s great-great-great grandfather.

George married Abigail Wheeler from King’s Norton in 1782.  They had six children. Their eldest son William (b. 1789) married Richard Ford’s daughter Ann. He became a maltster and owner of several Worcester pubs including the Farriers Arms in Fish Street. See Hartwrights behind Bars and  Delving into the Archives.

The Tithe Commutation took place before George died and it appears that the farmhouse where he lived was replaced with the farmhouse which is now “The Timberdine” pub, St Peter’s, Worcester. George’s will reveals that he owned feather beds, bolsters and bedsteads, a mahogany table, seven chairs, china and a silver tankard. For more wills go to Some Wills and Letters of Administration from 1650 -1922

William’s eldest son was named James Ford Hartwright (b. 1812) and he farmed at Linacre’s in Claines parish near Worcester. James’s youngest son was Albert (b.1865) who was a County Surveyor for the Worcestershire County Council

Albert’s son,  William Richard, appears to have been in the RAF during World War II. On the 10th December 1940 William Richard Hartwright  (24209) was listed as having received his promotion from Squadron. Leader to Wing Commander.  He is mentioned on Australian websites concerning the Amberley Airfield.

William the Maltster’s youngest son William Richard (b.1833) was the father of the Reverend William Richard Hartwright. (b.1860). Amongst his parishes were Pitminster, Taunton Somerset, Belvedere in Kent (1909 – 1936) In 1939 he was living at Tempsford Rectory, Sandy, Bedfordshire.

More branches are descended from George’s son, George of Kempsey who married Betsey Harris in 1837.  One of their son’s Henry (b.1843) went to live in Aston where he and his wife Sarah Eden had nine children. Two sons Harry Howard (b.1877) and Jim (b.1887). are known to have present day descendants in the UK and Australia. Henry’s younger brother William (b.1848) was a butcher who moved to Gloucester with his wife Emma Wells.  There are no known present day male Hartwright descendants of this latter branch.

Names associated with this branch include: Jones, Wilson, Cole, Mence, Walker, Mansell, Wilkins, Smith and Roberts.
