John and his wife Mary Fownes had five children.

Their third son, whom I call William of Oxford (1794 - 1867) was a cordwainer who moved to Oxford and married Mary Rose from Hook Norton, Oxfordshire.  He carried on his business as bootmaker at 36 High Street, St Clements, Oxford.

Their eldest son George (1819 - 1846) and his wife Elizabeth Farrell died young and it was left to William and Mary to bring up their young grandsons George William (1842 - 1884) and Frederick Edward (1844 - 1917).

George W.  became a bookbinder in Oxford . His son, George Edwin (1865 - 1931) and his wife Sarah had two children who survived into adulthood one of whom was George Frederick who was born in London in 1898. His descendants live in the South of England.

George’s brother, Frederick Edward “Fred”  and his wife Emma had eight children. Fred who was initially a college servant at one of the colleges in Oxford, later he and his wife, Emma Welland, taught at the school at Llanelwedd near Builth Wells, in Wales. They had eight children

Their eldest son Frederick William (b. 1867) married Kezia Slingo by whom he had seven children. Some of their sons died in the World War I and a grandson in World War II.  See Hartwright Military Records World War I and  II and In Memoriam

Fred W. and his second wife Kit (nee Purser) emigrated to Australia, where he too served in the Army. After the Great War Fred was a successful carpenter and joiner and built his home in Salisbury, Brisbane naming it “Fernhurst” after the village where he had lived in England. His grandson John Nolan wrote that Fred W. built wooden lighthouses, schools and houses. The houses are “Old Queenslander” style and some still survive today.

The male line for Fred W’s branch seems to have ceased but the female line continues in the UK in the names of West and East, and in Australia in the names of  Nolan and Taylor.
