The HartwrightsClick here for an explanation of the Branches of the Hartwright Family William of Oxford’s descendants continued Frederick Edward Hartwright’s second son Percy (1869 - 1905) was an insurance agent by the time of the 1901 census, but family legend has it that he was also a boxer. He and his wife Minnie had three children, but only Olive lived long enough to marry. She became Mrs Adams.
Fred and Emma’s next son who was known as “Alec” was involved with horse racing as a stable lad.
His brother Archie Herbert (1877–1956) was an excellent sportsman, playing county cricket for Surrey, and enjoyed other sports including football and running, as well as country pursuits. Archie became Headmaster at Camelsdale School near Haslemere, Surrey at the age of 28 and remained in that position until he retired after the end of World War II. He married in the 1930’s and his wife, son and grand-daughter and her husband live in the UK. Archie’s younger brother Sidney married and emigrated to Canada. Their sisters Madeline and Lilian married but did not have any children.
William of Oxford’s son Henry of Headington (1822 – 1876) He married Mary Kemp and they too had a large family. The two main lines are through their son William (1847 – 1926) who was a butcher and married Sarah Farnell, and Charles (1853 – 1911) who lived for a while in Leicester before moving to Birmingham where he was a tailor. His first wife’s name was Harriet, later he married Louisa Reading.
You can read about one of William’s sons “Jack” in Hartwrights behind Bars. Descendants of Jack and his brother Henry who married Ada Hart live in the UK . Associated names include Tuckley see www.users.globalnet.co.uk/~tuckley/genealogy/tmars.html and Spendlove.
Charles’s son Percy is mentioned in Hartwright Military records World War I and II and In Memoriam as he died whilst serving in the 18th Battalion Canadian Infantry in World War I. Percy’s sister also emigrated to Canada with her husband Thomas Hadden. Their sister Harriet married Frank Atkins.
Charles had fathered thirteen children. The two eldest sons Ernest and Charles were born in Leicester and like their father were tailors in Birmingham. The younger Charles (1874 -1915) married Laura Jones in 1893 only four years before his father married for a second time. This means that some of his children are older than their uncles and aunts! Charles and Laura’s eldest son Charles Henry (b.1896) who married Sarah Bond in 1918 has descendants living in the UK and Australia.
