The Hartwrights

Thomas I of Claines youngest son George of Upton-upon-Severn, Worcs 1767- 1833

Click here for an explanation of the Branches of the Hartwright Family

George seems to have married twice and had five children. He was a gamekeeper. See George Hartwright – Licensed to kill 1789.

Descendants of George’s fourth daughter  -  Caroline who married Joseph Carter in 1834 - are believed to live in the USA. Caroline’s birth in 1816 was followed by George in 1818 who was a sawyer at Castlemorton, Worcs  and married Mary Ann Davis in 1847 in Upton-upon-Severn, Worcs. Their descendants form one of the largest branches of Hartwrights in the UK and Canada. Associated names include Pierce, Gomm, Littlemore, Burston, Jones and Smith in the UK and Oke, Smith, Dobbie and Woodhams in Canada.

George of Castlemorton’s son’s John William (1852 – 1910), his wife Fanny Wallis and family lived in Stapleford, Nottingham where he worked on the railways.  Of their five children the eldest George (1879 – 1953) and his wife Beatrice Hallam had ten children, including eight sons.  The eight sons had more than sixteen sons plus daughters between them and so this branch continues to grow!

John William’s brother Thomas (1857 – 1934) had joined the King’s Dragoon Guards at the age of sixteen and when they went to India he was at the relief of Lucknow. It was his future wife Mary Jones who persuaded him to go to a Watch meeting and he was converted. They married in 1896 in Upton-on-Severn, Worcs. Thomas was a market gardener and for a while was a Sunday-school teacher for the Baptists eventually he became a Methodist minister. Mary was an accomplished needlewoman with her own business and little school.  See Margaret Bramford’s books  ”From Cottage to Palace” published in 1991 and  “This was our Malvern” Vols 1 and 2 for more about Mary and her son Austin.

Two of Thomas and Mary’s sons were old enough to serve in World War I. Austin (born 1899) was in the Navy in the gun boat Kilfulert patrolling the Mediterranean escorting minesweepers, whilst George (born 1897) was in the RASC. In the 1920’s George emigrated to Canada and married Velma Ainley in 1927.  Their Family Tree can be found at http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi. His sister Dora, who had married Edgar John Smith emigrated to Canada after World War II.

You can read an extract from George and Austin’s youngest brother John Edmund’s Reminiscences and their brother Cyril’s son John, in  John Austin’s Reminiscences.

Thomas and Mary’s descendants live mainly in Worcestershire and Ontario, Canada.
