1) Hartwrights who are descendants of Thomas Hartwright I of Claines, Worcestershire 1698 -1771

1) January 1751/52 Mary Hartwright (nee Sherwin - First wife of William of Clerkenleap, Kempsey, Worcs) She died intestate (on 16 January 1751/52 aged approx. 27). On 27th April 1763 her husband was granted “Admons.” (Letters of Administration).

Document 1 - Her husband William was sworn before surrogate Thomas Miles that her estate was less than £20.

Document 2 - pro forma of the Registry of the Consistory Court of the Diocese of Worcester binding for £20 William, Joseph Harris and John Doe to make a perfect inventory of Mary’s goods, chattels and credits and if at some future date a will is found they will make a request to have it allowed. (The inventory has not been deposited at the CRO at Worcester.)

Document 3 - Proved 27 April 1763  “A true and perfect Inventory of all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of Mary Hartwright of the Parish of Saint Peter in the County and diocese and near to the City of Worcester Intestate and deceased appeared this twenty seventh Day of April 1763

A legacy left to the deceased in and by the Will of Joseph Cookes deceased £10-0-0d

2) 1771 Thomas Hartwright of Claines, Worcs Yeoman born circa 1698 died 1771 (aged approx 73)

Transcription of will.

Written 24 August 1769. Proved 24 February 1772.

Witnesses – Elias Anthonis, John Laurence and Thomas Davies.

Executor – His eldest son William Hartwright (of Clerkenleap) Trustee Thomas Morris the Younger.

3) 1791 William Hartwright of Clerkenleap, Kem(p)sey, Worcs. – Gentleman (aged approx. 68) Will written 19 January 1791. Proved 23 January 1792 under £1000.00.

Witnesses Rev M Mence, John Platt, John Rudge(?).

Executors of the will sons John and George.( by second wife Mary Mucklow

4) 1784 Elizabeth Hartwright of Claines, Worcs (nee Jones - widow of Thomas Hartwright I of Claines)  Died intestate (aged approx. 44) On 17 September 1794 Letters of Administration were granted to her son John Hartwright of Claines Yeoman and William of Kempsey Gentleman (Her stepson William of Clerkenleap). Similar documents to 1 and 2 relating to admons for (1)Mary Sherwin Hartwright. In this case they were bound for £80. Her Goods, Chattels and Credits amounted to less than £100.

 

5) 1824 William Hartwright late of the parish of Powick. Worcs On 17 May 1824. (aged 41) Letters of Administration were granted to his wife Elizabeth (nee Nicholls) and Thomas Nicholls of Powick Gentleman and William Nicholls of All Saints. 

Left less than £1500.00. Obligation document to Right Rev Folliott Bishop of Worcester firmly bound in the sum of £3000 with Thomas Nicholls Powick Worcs and William Nicholls of All Saints Worcester

 

6) 1834 James Hartwright of Hardwick’s Court Eldersfield Worcs.  – Farmer. Died 23 April 1834. (aged 44) Written 31 March 1834 Proved 11 May 1835. £450 Witnesses - William Halsey, Mary Poytress and Edwin Clarke. Executors of the will – Wife Mary Hartwright (nee Clarke), John Clarke of Drinkers End, Eldersfield Farmer, William Yeomans of the same parish – Farmer.

 

Family members mentioned. Wife Mary, sons  - James and George.

Items mentioned – “Household goods Bed and Furniture Plate Linen China”, “Farming Stock Implements of Husbandry growing and other Crops, Monies Securities and securities for money”.

 

7) 1834  James Hartwright of Dripshill, Great Malvern, Worcs. at Kempsey – Husbandman. Died 14 August 1834 (aged 68)) Will proved 11 October 1834. £1500. Surviving Executor Enoch Lloyd.

Family members mentioned. Married daughters Mrs Maria Hartwright, Sarah Clemens and Mary Lloyd, granddaughter Elizabeth, daughter of Henry Hartwright of Ravenshill. Son James (who predeceased him) and son-in-law Enoch Lloyd.

 

8) 1839 Henry Hartwright of (Ravenshill) Tibberton, Worcs – Farmer Died 12 August 1839. (aged 50). Will written 4 April 1838.  Executors of will – William Hobbs - Auctioneer, Enoch Lloyd - Farmer of Hanley Castle and John Rimmell of St Johns – Farmer. (brothers-in-law)

Family members mentioned. His wife Marie daughter of James Hartwright (stet). Daughter Elizabeth (by first wife Elizabeth also nee Hartwright).  His brothers, sisters and two daughters of late brother James.

 

9) 1847 John Hartwright late of Stonebow Peopleton now of Ravenhill (sic) Tibberton, Worcs.  Will written 16 September 1834 died 23 January 1847 (aged 84)

Executors - son Henry and son-in-law John Rimmell.

He left money to his deceased son James’s two daughters and to his grand daughter Elizabeth Rimmell.  All the rest and residue went to his 5 children Henry, John, Elizabeth Rimmell, Maria Smith, and Mary/Catherine Day.

 

10) 1854 John Hartwright (of Little Broomhall, Worcs) had died intestate (aged 61) On 25 April 1855 Letters of Administration were granted to Ann (nee Allington) his widow using similar documents to documents 1 and 2 mentioned in the Letters of Administration for Elizabeth Hartwright’s estate above. Signatories-  Ann, William Hartwright of Claines, Maltster and farmer, (John’s eldest brother) and Thomas Robert Huxley of the City of Worcester, Gentleman were bound for £900. John’s Goods Chattels and Credits amounted to less than £450.

 

11) 1856 William Hartwright of Claines, Worcs – Gentleman (Farmer and Maltster aged 67 years mentioned in the above will) Died 1856 (aged 67)

Family members mentioned sons James Ford Hartwright, William Richard and daughters Ann, Eliza, Jane, Emma, Charlotte.

Items mentioned – Leasehold of “The Boat” Public House in Sansome Fields Estate and Malthouse and Garden in St Peters. The freehold of what is now “The Farriers Arms” in Fish Street but is described as follows in the will ”called the Archangel (therein by mistake called the Dark Angel) but now called The Globe in Fish Street, Parish of St Helens”. The freeholds for Green Dragon in Newport Street in the Parish of All Saints  “The Don-Cossac but now called by the name of The Ten Bells situate in Dolday Street” All Saints; The Boat in Lowesmoor in the Parish of St Martins. Stock, farming, malting and household goods.

 

12) 1859 George Hartwright of the Red Lion Inn St Peter’s Worcester – Innkeeper died 1 January 1859 (aged 68). Late of Little Angel Street – Eating House Keeper.

Family members - wife Betsey (nee Harris) Eliza, George, Harriett, Henry, James and William. Probate granted to son George as daughter Eliza already deceased.

Land – Colletts Green 2 messuages and tenements known as Brooks. 3 acres, west of Collettts Green occupied by William Allen and James Downes. Plus part of common Swinehead Leasow now of George Hall being in Powick.

 

13) 1869 John of Hartwright of Ravenshill Tibberton, Worcs – Farmer. Died 24 January 1869 (aged 87) Family members mentioned – late (second) wife Elizabeth.  Executors - son William and good friend William Rimmell. Son James had already inherited small property through his mother. James and other children William, John, Mary Holloway, Sarah Baylis and Jane Payne all inherited money.  Children of late daughter Ann Coldicott also left money. Codicil necessary as daughter Sarah Baylis had died, so money left to her children.

 

14) 1869 Ann Hartwright, Timberdine Farm, St Peter’s Worcs.(nee Allington – widow of John Hartwright). Died 15 June 1869, aged 73. Executors - John Payne – Butcher, William Hemus – Farmer at Broomhall.

Left to son John - Furniture, cattle etc plus to keep a home for her daughter Ann. If Ann left farm to give her £100. Son George to stay at home, if he wants to leave the farm, to be at John’s discretion how much he gives him.

 

15) 1871 Maria Hartwright of Malvern Terrace, Tallow Hill, Worcester (nee Hartwright - widow of Henry Hartwright of Ravenshill) died 21 December 1871 (aged 72). Requested to be buried at Spetchley (Hartwright family graves in the C of E Churchyard are to  the right of the path but none of the lettering remains). Executors:- Henry Lloyd,  Walter Price (nephews) and Mary Ann Day.

Family members – Maria did not have any children. She left her estate to her nieces and nephews. James and Maria Nichols’ children, Thomas Nichols’ eldest child, nieces Elizabeth Ann Beach, Martha Clemens, Emma Key Lloyd and Jane Lloyd daughter of Mary and Enoch Lloyd, Ann Day, nephew Walter Price, great niece Jane Baylis, Elizabeth Wormington and to Father Waterworth - Roman Catholic Church Sansome Street for the poor of Worcester.

                                    

16) 1873 Ann Hartwright late of the Parish of St Peter Worcester spinster (daughter of William and Ann Ford Hartwright), died 10th December 1873 (aged 59) Probate 9th March 1874 to William Richard Hartwright Maltster, brother and Charlotte Hartwright spinster, sister, both of St Peter the Great Worcester.

                         

17) 1876 John Henry Hartwright of Ravenshill, Tibberton Worcs. Died 7 March 1876 (aged 44) at Letters of Administration were granted to his wife Harriet (nee Featherstone)

 

18) 1877 John Hartwright of Timberdine Farm St Peter the Great Worcester – Farmer. Died 29 January 1877. (aged 41). A relatively informal will. Executors John Payne Butcher The Tything and Jane Andrews – Hay dealer, Lowesmoor. He left his estate to his sister Ann, with the wish that she should go to Broomhall to reside with her brother William.  She should take whichever cattle she wanted and the executors should sell everything on her behalf at the best time of year.

 

19) 1881 William Hartwright originally of The Lodge, Rochford, Hereford – Farmer, late of Sevington in the parish of Acton Beauchamp. Died 26 August 1881 (aged 62) Executors Robert Robinson of Tenbury and John Holloway of The Hyde, Bromyard, Herefordshire (later Sevington Farm). He granted whole estate on trust “to invest for Julia Ann Greaves presently residing with him”.

20) 1899 William Richard Hartwright of Sidbury St Peter’s Worcester – Maltster. Died 31 December 1899. (aged 66) Executor - his son Mr William Richard, Clerk in holy orders.

 

21) 1909 George Hartwright of Brookhill Norton-juxta-Kempsey Worcs. Butcher died 25 November 1909. (aged 69) Probate was granted to his widow Elizabeth (nee Kings).

 

23) 1917 Harriett Hartwright (nee Featherstone - widow of John Hartwright) 5 page will. Originally written 23 January 1899. Died 27 September 1917 (aged 84) Executors – Joseph Wythes of Crowle, Worcs, William Weaver Holtham of the Cornmarket Worcester, Corn Merchant and son Henry Hartwright of Ravenshill, Tibberton Worcs. Probate granted 22 November 1917.

Family members mentioned. 7 children – Henry, John, Mary, Ellen Trewin wife of Thomas of Aston Hall Farm, Margery Harriet, Sarah and Edward William. Codicil 7 May 1904 advancing her son John a further £100 and her son Henry £100, which will be taken as part satisfaction of their respective share.

 

24) 1899 Charlotte Hartwright of Sidbury Street St Peter Worcester spinster (daughter of William and Ann Ford Hartwright) and died 22nd April 1899. (aged 78) Probate at Worcester 27th September 1899 to William Price Hughes, solicitor and Rev William Richard Hartwright clerk (in Holy Orders - her brother)

 

25) 1922 Elizabeth Hartwright (nee Kings – widow of George Hartwright) 186 Astwood Road Worcester. Died 7 November 1922 (in her 85th year) Executors niece Lucy Elizabeth Moseley of the same address and Charles Walter Potter of Vicar Street, Worcester.

Family members mentioned – Brother George Kings, late sister Matilda Gibbs children from first marriage surname Frances, late brother James Kings children and those of her sister Harriet Skeys.

Summary of will

Bequests: Mr Francis Smith, Clerk and Mr Nathanyall Rollin each to receive one hundred pounds of muscuvados sugar. All the rest and residue to his second wife Mary and his four children including Elizabeth and Anne daughters of his first wife Elizabeth, and Mary the daughter of his second wife Mary and her former husband “Hughseard” and his own daughter Mary by his second wife Mary so that the “said children shall have their breeding maintenance and education out of my personall estate until they or any of them atteyne to the age of sixteen yeares” after which they are to have their portion. His wife Mary to be their “trustress and governess”  Thomas also gave to his “loving friend Capt Henry Nelson as a token of my love five hundred pounds of muscuvado sugar”.  His wife was sole executrix of his will, but he also appointed Mr Philip Hermersley, Morgan Powell, and Robert Harding to assist her in the education etc of the children and to take over the running of his estate.

Henry Nelson and George Sturman were witnesses to the will. On 28 July 1651 George Sturman aged 30 years or thereabouts “swored before me this day sayth that he saw Lt Tho. Hartwright signe seale and publish this within wrtying as His Last Will and further sayth not.” George Stanfast.
